Brillouin scattering in silica microwires

Abstract

We report the observation of Brillouin scattering arising from Rayleigh acoustic waves in silica microwires with diameter from 0.8-2 microns. The frequency shift behavior is qualitatively explained by the dispersion relation of the fundamental acoustic modes.
