Abstract
The importance of nutritional support in patients in intensive care units (ICU) has been highlighted for many years. This is particularly important in those entering the ICU with lung disease that progresses to respiratory failure who required ventilatory support, where the importance of energy metabolism is demonstrated in major complications such as mortality, time on mechanical ventilation, and time in ICU. The present article shows a narrative review of the evidence on the use of nutritional therapy, and its influence on the outcome of patients admitted to the ICU due to respiratory failure.
