Abstract

Introduction: Pre-eclampsia is a disorder that occurs during pregnancy and affects about 10% of all pregnant women in developing countries, being one of the pathologies with the highest rate of maternal morbidity and mortality. Objectives: To collect scientific evidence for guiding the management of preeclampsia and to find evidence that describes the role of platelets and genetic markers within this pathology. Analysis and synthesis of the information: Fifty updated bibliographies on the subject published from 2015 to 2019 are reviewed, in order to search for evidence that describes the role of platelets and genetic markers within this pathology. Other studies have oriented their investigations towards genes and molecular mechanisms, since more than 50 related candidate genes have been reported, whose polymorphisms can serve as biomarkers. Conclusions: It has been shown by different authors that platelet indices can be an effective instrument to establish the severity of the disease before and during its presentation. This measurement could be adopted in health centers, and it would be useful in developing countries, where first-level centers do not have specialized devices for the diagnosis of pre-eclampsia, which would make it possible to initiate early treatment, and reduce complications of the illness.
