Pluvial Flood Risk Assessment in Monteverde, Monteria, Colombia, by Means of Hydrological and Hydrodynamic Models

Research output: Chapter in Book/Conference proceedingConference and proceedingspeer-review

Abstract

This research aims to establish the levels of pluvial flood hazard in the Monteverde neighborhood of the city of Monteria in Colombia, a zone characterized by flat topography and rapid urban growth, which exacerbate flooding risks. A hydrological and hydraulic analysis was conducted using historical precipitation data, Digital Elevation Models (DEMs), and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The study involved creating Intensity-Duration-Frequency (IDF) curves, performing hydraulic modeling through HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS software, and generating hazard maps for different return periods. Results indicated that while the area shows low to moderate flood hazard levels, certain zones are critically exposed due to drainage capacity constraints and urban impermeabilization. With this research, we proposed mitigation measures, including structural improvements to drainage channels and community awareness campaigns. These findings provide essential input for local urban planning and risk management strategies.
