Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To gather the biomarkers identified in the current literature capable of predicting the response to treatment of patients with lupus nephritis associated with thrombotic microangiopathy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective study based on a bibliographic search of articles published in the last five years and registered in the databases PubMed, Science Direct, Clinical Key, Google Scholar, Embase, Lilacs and Scielo with the terms MesH lupus nephritis, thrombotic microangiopathy and systemic lupus erythematosus, as well as the key terms treatment and predictors. Studies with outcomes of interest were selected regardless of study type.
RESULTS: Several biomarkers are currently useful in lupus nephritis; among them proteinuria continues to be the strongest biomarker for predicting long-term renal outco Many new molecules have proven to be useful in the diagnosis and prognosis of this disease, such as monocyte chemoattractant protein and gelastin-associated lipocalin, among others. Finally, some biomarkers such as VCAM-1, T-CD8 lymphocyte count and CD11b protein decreased with clinical remission.
CONCLUSIONS: Lupus nephritis is a frequent complication of systemic lupus erythematosus that associated with thrombotic microangiopathy worsens the prognosis of clinical outcome of the patient, likewise, several diagnostic methods and biomarkers have been identified that can contribute to early and successful intervention in patients
with this disease.
