Salud mental y recursos de afrontamiento en pacientes hospitalizados por COVID-19

Research output: Contribution to scientific journalArticle in an indexed scientific journalpeer-review

Abstract

The objective of the present research is to analyze the different psychosocial characteristics and coping resources of patients hospitalized by COVID-19, highlighting their effects on mental health, based on the narratives and experiences identified in the medical records of the Clínica Universitaria Bolivariana
between July 1 and October 31, 2020. The research, with a qualitative approach and a documentary-type hermeneutic design, carried out a non- probabilistic inclusion criteria sampling, in which 61 clinical histories were identified that met the previously defined requirements. The results show that during the hospital experience a wide range of situations emerge that involve the presence of emotional discomfort, a perception of loneliness and a recognition of losses; at the same time, patients use a variety of coping strategies in an adaptive process that allows building a scenario of well-being. The study gathers several singularities inscribed in the framework of significant stressors faced by patients in a context of hospital isolation; in this perspective the reflections derived could be extended to populations that in other contexts face strong isolation measures for reasons of hospital biosecurity. The psychosocial demands encountered lead to the conclusion that psychosocial accompaniment and the construction of a psychosocial support system are fundamental.
