Abstract
This paper presents a conceptual design of a battery energy storage system (BESS) for Colombia's Aquasol solar PV hybrid system. The study comprehensively analyzes the components required to implement the BESS system and proposes a conceptual alternative. The system capacity was calculated from the requirement to provide a constant monthly production according to the estimated annual PVsyst energy production used for plant sizing. For the design of the BESS, it was necessary to use historical environmental data, such as radiation and ambient temperature, technical data of the equipment to be used, tilt, voltages, and cooling systems, but mainly information on the total and surplus energy generated by the PV system in the months of maximum production was required. The proposed BESS system allows storing the excess energy produced in periods of high solar resource availability to be used in periods of high daytime demand, when the solar resource is scarce due to environmental conditions, which helps flatten the demand curve and use less energy from the electric grid to supply these shortages, resulting in a more stable electric system; the system was calculated at 0.513MWh.
