Resumen
The cottonization of bast fibers represents a transformative approach to expand the portfolio of sustainable textile raw materials. In this study, fique (an abundant agro-residue from South America) was subjected to cottonization, enabling its processing into yarns and fabrics when blended with cotton at a 50/50 ratio. The cottonized fique fibers could be processed using conventional spinning equipment, resulting in yarns with high tensile resistance combined with enhanced elongation at break. This balance indicates improved elasticity while maintaining strength levels comparable to those of conventional cotton yarns. Fabrics produced from these yarns exhibited robust tensile and tearing resistance, high seam slippage resistance in both fabric directions, and effective moisture transport behavior, supporting their suitability for textile applications requiring mechanical durability and functional performance. Beyond technical performance, financial analysis confirmed the competitiveness of the process under industrial scaling, and environmental evaluation underscored the benefits of valorizing fique as a renewable, low-cost feedstock. These findings demonstrate that cottonization is not only a viable method for textile integration of fique but also a strategic step toward circular economy practices and the development of durable, sustainable fabrics for demanding applications.
