N2 - Utilization of Cartagena-La Unión Mining District (SE Spain) for more than 2500 years created deleterious effects on the environment and human health because of its chemical and physical characteristics. These effects can be ameliorated by the help of sustainable reclamation activities which can be seen as a required solution in order to return the mining area to an acceptable environmental condition. Sustainable reclamation activities, which require an extensive ecological knowledge, have to consider landscape values and functionality of the area, with the attention to the historical, socioeconomic and cultural aspects.
