Resumen
Introduction: obesity is a growing public health problem; One of the most affected population groups are women of childbearing age. Objective: to determine the frequency and explore the possible relationship between adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes in obese women in the postpartum period. Methods: descriptive and cross-sectional study. A group of obese women in the postpartum period, hospitalized in a high-complexity institution in Medellín, between June and October 2018, was included. Information was obtained from medical records and surveys. The SPSS v24 program was used to analyze the information. Results: 106 patients were included; 20.8 % with pregestational comorbidities and 43.4 % developed diseases during pregnancy. The gestational age was between 37-40 weeks in 90.6 % of the cases and the mean birth weight of the neonates was 3141±463 g. The majority (94.3 %) began pregnancy in the overweight range and 66 % increased their BMI; No significant association was found between the degree of obesity and weight gain during pregnancy with the maternal and perinatal outcomes found. The high frequency of diseases developed during pregnancy and the significant increase in the degree of obesity could increase the predisposition in pregnant women to conditions such as hypertensive disorders associated with pregnancy, hypothyroidism and gestational diabetes.
