Resumen
We report a case of a 42 years old man, with history of HIV infection, under disseminated cryptococcosis and Mycobacterium avium complex infection treatment. He developed general deterioration of his condition associated with dyspnea. A new complicated respiratory infection compatible with empyema secondary to lung abscess was identified, and three different species of Kocuria spp. were isolated. Surgical empyema drainage was carried out and start antibiotic coverage with ampicillin sulbactam. Subsequently, he presented a convulsive episode due to a cerebral abscess by the same microorganism, treatment with moxifloxacin was indicated, in addition to optimal management for his underlying disease and opportunistic infections, but despite that the patient died. Characteristics of this microorganism, the risk factors, its different clinical presentations, difficulties in laboratory identification and therapeutic alternatives are discussed.
