Oxidation behavior of electroless Ni-P and NiP-Fe3o4 coatings at 800°C under cyclic oxidation conditions

Resumen

Electroless Ni-P deposits modified with pure magnetite were applied on stainless steel substrates. Oxidation studies were carried out on Ni-P and NiP-Fe3O4 coatings in air at 800 0C for 150 cycles. The weight change was measured during the cyclic exposure test and it was observed that the weight gain was high in Ni-P coating compared to NiP-Fe 3O4. A nearly parabolic oxidation law behaviour was observed for both cases. The coatings were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive analysis (EDS). The electroless Ni-P modified with magnetite increased the oxidation resistance for the coating at 800°C over that of Ni-P. Among the three samples, Ni-P modified with magnetite has shown the best resistance to oxidation.
