Resumen

• Purpose: We analyze the results obtained with a scheme of preoperative arterial chemotherapy and hyperthermia applied to patients with sarcomas or melanomas of the extremities. • Material and methods: Between 1987 and 1995, 26 patients were studied, 14 with sarcomas, and 12 with relapsing melanomas. Employing catheterization as in cardiac surgery, all the patients received cisplatin 70 mg/sq m in a single cycle. The temperature of the tumor-bearing extremity was 41°-42°. • Results: The treatment was well tolerated, only minor toxic effects being observed. Results were obtained in 78% (28% CR), of the osteosarcomas; 20% (0% CR) of other sarcomas, and 77% (18% CR) of melanomas. Five-year survival rate was 55% for osteosarcomas, 20% for the other sarcomas, and 33% for melanomas. Conclusions: The employed scheme of treatment is effective, allowing undertaking a less mutilating surgery. Longer survival of patients with osteosarcoma is obtained.
