Resumen
This chapter elaborates on the potential of infusing the principles of Critical Digital Literacies into podcasting, drawing from Edison’s own experiences in his classroom and the ongoing conversations that Edison and Raúl (Edison’s mentor) had during the development of the study that this chapter draws from (Castrillón-Ángel, 2019b, 2020a, 2020b). The first part of the chapter reconceptualizes and recontextualizes the idea of podcasting as a transformative literacy practice (Castrillón-Ángel, 2019a), given the evidence of wider audiences and a more attuned sense of the kinds of critical consciousness (Mora, 2017; Willis et al., 2008) we need today. The chapter will detail how Edison created this project and the benefits of podcasting as a CDL practice when implemented in an academic context. Finally, we will describe seven steps for rethinking CDL practices in second-language teacher education through podcasting. This chapter also shares experiences that other educators around the world can consider when implementing podcasting as a CDL practice.
