“Slave Use” in the context of the Colombian war: between left-wing extremism and right-wing extremism

Resumen

Violent extremism is characterized by the rejection of democratic order and its
procedures in favor of political violence and terrorism; the systematic violation
of individual rights for the benefit of collective goods; the denial of plurality
in favor of social homogeneity; and obstinacy, fanaticism, and intolerance in
defense of “non-negotiable ends.”1 This radical political will, which expresses
constant dissatisfaction with existing socio-economic and political conditions,
justifies the most extreme and reprehensible acts of violence, including forced
recruitment and the murder of vast precarious populations. Specifically, the
extremist cause demands its dissemination and realization through ideological
indoctrination and compulsory enlistment, usually of young people in situations
of social, economic, and cultural vulnerability.2 All of this serves the benefit of the
radical collective, whose survival depends on the exercise of extreme violence.
